From
housing and construction experts, the heat loss escaping from a roof that is
not insulated is around 25%. To have your energy bills go down, you can install
your insulation roof yourself or through a professional. Either way you cut
down on your regular energy bill for good.
On
the other end of the picture, insulating the roof is also one ideal way of
preventing unwanted heat penetration from the outside of your house (or
building). An insulation foil can reduce the amount of sun’s radiant heat. (It
doubles up as a protection of heat leaks during the cold months.)
Benefits
With
the use of an effective roof insulation material, the convective heat inside
the house in winter creates a warm atmosphere. In short, with the proper use of
a perfect type of insulation, the amount of energy needed either for heating or
cooling inside the building diminishes.
Likewise,
when the insulation material for the roof is properly installed, the chances
from thermal and moisture condensation also decrease. Moisture condensation
creates problems like mildew, molds, rot and dripping. With enough ventilation,
the insulation under the roof surface helps the moisture to escape and stop the
buildup of ice (and its subsequent damage).
Loft insulation
As
always, a cold loft needs to be insulated immediately to preclude the escape of
heat. The cheapest involves heating between and over the wooden joists that are
immediately above the ceiling of your top floor. You can do it DIY.
If
your loft is used fro storage, you have to clear it with authorities like any
other grant-assisted work. Grants don’t really cover the cost of clearing a
loft. You can always check your stored items if you still need them.
Costs
With
regards to costs, there are still other options available for roof insulation.
Some are not that expensive. Also, there are energy-efficient grants available
for cold loft roof insulation.
On
the other hand, warm roof solutions are expensive. The saving grace is that
they can provide a higher level of heat retention. You can also get around more
easily using your loft for storing temperature-sensitive items. Cold roof can
get fey hot during the summer months.
Types
A
warm roof or a warm deck usually refers to the condition where the deck of the
roof, usually constructed from wood, is below the insulation. Cold deck or cold
roof is when the insulation is below the roof deck and the joists.
There
is also a gap needed to be left for ventilation. If this is a cold area, they
might form a condensation which can lead to rot. The inverted roof is the
condition where the insulation above the weather membrane where it protects it
from the heat and cold.
Both
of these can shorten its life and that of the rood deck itself. It can also
protect against wear and tear. The inverted roof features a top most layer that
is generally gravel or of similar materials. All in all, insulation roof is
relatively easier to install compared with the others.
